Financial planning tips for entrepreneurs

5–7 minutes
If you’re earning well but don’t feel in control of your money, you’re not alone. This is how we can help:
I’m a business owner myself. And like many entrepreneurs, I know how easy it is to put yourself last.
Your days are full of clients, staff, sales, operations, and problems that need fixing now. Even pulling information together for your accountant once a year can feel like another thing on an already long list. So stepping back to think about what you really want from the success you’ve built can feel like an afterthought.
And when someone mentions looking at your finances, the reaction is usually the same:
more numbers, more spreadsheets, more headspace I don’t have.
Before going any further, I want to address a belief many business owners quietly hold. Your business is not, by itself, your ticket to financial freedom nor a guaranteed retirement plan. Not because it isn’t valuable, successful, or providing you with a healthy salary, but because this strategy is surrounded by variables you can’t fully control. It relies heavily on the business continuing its success, growing year on year, your health and wellbeing remaining unchanged, and your enjoyment of work continuing.
It puts all your eggs in one basket and adds even more pressure to your shoulders.
It also leaves much of the planning as an afterthought. Rather than knowing what number you need based on your lifestyle, wants and needs, you simply take the salary you can afford or accept the exit figure presented. When you know your number, this changes the focus of the business. It gives you clarity to work towards and gives an exit figure real meaning.
I thought selling my business for seven figures in a few years would be enough. When I sat down with Jacqui and Emmelia, I realised how much I hadn’t considered and how much money I actually needed to maintain my lifestyle. It was an eye-opening exercise.

Most of us work hard for purpose, but also to earn back the freedom that success often takes from us. True financial freedom starts with understanding what “enough” looks like for you. That clarity comes from a financial plan that looks at both your business and your personal life together. Without it, it’s very hard to know whether a projected exit value, or the business year on year, is truly supporting the life you’re working so hard to build.
Three key benefits of financial planning for entrepreneurs
1. “I’m always working and never enjoying what I’ve built.”
This is one of the most common costs of success. You built the business for freedom, but somehow the harder you work for it, the less of it you feel you have. You’re always “on” and even when you have flexibility, you rarely use it.
How we help:
We help you define what “enough” actually looks like for you. Then we plan together how to get there. For some of our clients, this exercise shows that they can afford to take more time off, retire earlier, or hire additional support to reduce their workload. When you understand what the business needs to deliver and what you need from it, you start to feel more in control and able to aim for a better balance.
2. “I’m thinking of selling one day but I don’t know if i can afford to retire.”
Many entrepreneurs feel trapped, believing that without the business they can’t afford to continue living the life they’ve worked hard to build. So they keep working tirelessly, without a clear end goal in sight. In doing so, they give up the most precious asset they own: time.
Sitting down to map out your future, and how the business can support it, is often one of the most motivating and clarifying exercises you can do.
How we help:
We help you test what an exit would realistically mean, financially and personally, using our cash-flow modelling tool. That includes understanding timing, income needs, and what life could look like afterwards. With clarity, an exit stops feeling like a cliff edge and starts to feel like a choice.
3. “I want my business to provide a legacy for my family.”
Whether that means passing something on, funding education, or creating long-term security, many entrepreneurs want their hard work to mean something beyond themselves. Without a plan, however, legacy often remains a vague hope.
How we help:
We help you connect business success to long-term family outcomes. That may include planning around pensions, investments, trusts, group company structures, family investment companies, or exit strategies. The focus is on turning effort into lasting security, not just short-term income.
4. “I’ve worked so hard to get here, I want to protect it and my life.”
Many entrepreneurs carry quiet fears:
What if this slows down?
What if I get ill?
What if it all falls apart?
When your income, identity, and family security are tied to one business, that risk can feel heavy.
How we help:
We help you build personal security alongside the business, with the aim of reducing vulnerability, not ambition. This includes protection planning, accessible savings, and long-term structures that protect your family even if the business goes through a difficult period.
