Financial planning tips for professional footballers

5–7 minutes
If football is going well but the future feels uncertain, you’re not alone. This is how we can help:
Being a professional footballer is job that most people don’t fully understand. We’ve lived it for the past 15 years, and until you’re in it yourself, it’s hard to see how uncertain it can be.
A career in sport has very little structure. Contracts are short, clubs can be unstable, injuries happen and income can change quickly. The window to earn well is much shorter than most other careers.
That’s why financial planning isn’t a “nice to have” for players, it’s essential.
At the start of my husband Nick’s career, we felt unstoppable. He had a good contract and big belief in a long future at the top level. At 17 and 18, we weren’t thinking about injuries, being released, new managers, or what life might look like after football. We weren’t thinking about houses, families, or who to trust. We were young, he was earning well, and focused on playing.
That stage doesn’t always last as long as you think.
Even though you can earn well, you still worry about money, how long it will last and what happens when it ends. It’s another pressure and I have felt it, especially when things in football aren’t going well.

Very quickly, a lifestyle forms. Large spending can start to feel normal, and responsibilities grow just as fast. At some point, something may change, perhaps a few injuries, a move that doesn’t work out, bad timing, or a manager who doesn’t play you. This is when questions and worries start to creep in, and you begin to face one big thought:
What happens when football stops?
It’s one of the heaviest questions to carry when you don’t have clear answers. And the longer you leave tackling that question, the bigger it can start to feel.
We work with professional athletes to take that weight off their shoulders. Not by overcomplicating things, but by putting simple structure in place so players can focus on football without constantly worrying about money or the future.
Three key benefits of financial planning for footballers
1. “Am I doing the right thing with my money?”
This is one of the most common questions young players have. You’re earning more than most people your age, but no one really teaches you what to do with it and it’s hard to know who to trust.
How we help:
We help you slow things down and make sense of what you have during your current contract (the only real certainty). That means helping you organise your money, avoid simple mistakes, minimise tax, save towards the life you want, and put a plan in place to provide you with income later on.
2. “What happens if I get injured, should my plan change?”
We’ve lived through injuries ourselves. The isolation, the late nights worrying, the panic that creeps in when you realise an injury doesn’t just affect how you feel, but that it can affect your current contract and your future ones too.
In those moments, it can feel like everything you’ve worked towards could be taken away. That loss of control is frightening, especially when you haven’t got a handle of your finances.
How we help:
Financial planning is about giving you stability when football feels uncertain. With all our clients, we plan for unexpected changes to income. We keep things flexible, making sure money is accessible, and ensuring you have enough set aside to support you through season, injuries and contracts changing.
Having a plan in place, where your finances are organised and thought through makes setbacks feel less overwhelming. Not just because you understand how much money you have, but because you also have a team supporting you through those transitions.
3. “I have commercial contracts and sponsorship in a limited company, should this be included in my plan?”
Commercial income is a great way to diversify and boost your overall wealth. It can also support personal brand building and intellectual property (IP) while you’re still playing, potentially creating other business opportunities and, later on, giving you more options as you transition away from football.
Many players aren’t sure how this income fits into the bigger picture and can miss opportunities to maximise it, reduce tax, and use it effectively to plan for their future.
How we help:
Yes, this income should absolutely be included in your plan. We help you understand how your sponsorship and commercial income fits alongside your playing income, and how to structure it sensibly. That includes looking at tax, how money is taken out, and how it supports your long-term goals. Bringing everything together gives you clarity and helps ensure none of your income, assets, or commercial opportunities are
4. “I worry about how much money I can live off when I retire.”
This worry often starts earlier than people expect. Even young players can’t ignore the fact that football careers are short, and life afterwards is long. Without clear answers, it’s easy to either avoid the question or assume things will just work out.
How we help:
We help you understand what you’re building and what it could provide in the future. Using long-term planning, we look at how much income your savings, investments and pensions could realistically give you later in life. This helps you see whether you’re on track to maintain the lifestyle you’ve built or are building, and what changes might be needed. Knowing the numbers removes fear and replaces it with confidence and choice.
